We believe that independent reading units should not be reserved for advanced classrooms. All students should be provided with the opportunity to read accessible, high-interest books. Check out our book lists for recommendations!

Most required texts are by dead, white, & male authors. Independent reading provides opportunities for students to read books more connected to personal experiences and identities or to read books that introduce them to new ideas and worlds. 

Teenagers have a profound desire to use their voices which is frequently silenced in a traditional school setting. Providing opportunities for students to choose their reading assignments is a safe way to practice using their voices in the academic space.  

While routine and structure are important aspects of a classroom, there is value in changing up routines to reenergize the classroom. We find choice book units to be an academic and meaningful way to invigorate a space (especially in the third quarter!).
